The clean energy transition is moving at breakneck speed. A little over a decade ago, many dismissed battery technology as too expensive and too limited for widespread adoption. Today, those same skeptics watch electric vehicles roll off production lines worldwide while massive battery installations stabilize our power grids.
But this is only the beginning. The real revolution lies ahead with solid-state batteries (SSBs)—technology that promises to transform not just cars and consumer devices but aviation, shipping and heavy industry. The global industry—including the U.S.—is racing to develop these next-generation batteries. They last longer and are safer, more powerful and, by most measures, superior to anything we’ve built before.
But as we accelerate toward this future, we must solve a critical challenge that threatens to undermine the entire enterprise: end-of-life recycling.
